Chiropractic is a natural healing method that embraces a non-invasive, non-surgical, and drug-free approach to treatment of the human body. Chiropractic is a science, an art, and a philosophy.
The science of chiropractic is based on the understanding that the nervous system is protected by the spine and cranium and it controls and affects every other system in the body. When the spine gets out of alignment or loses it normal movement pattern, it can cause irritation to the nervous system, called a subluxation. This can lead to interference to the way the musculosketetal and nervous systems function as well as the rest of the body. We correct the subluxation by providing hands on adjustments which cause the gentle "popping" of the restricted joints.
Chiropractic focuses on the spine, however our doctors also evaluate and treat other joints of the body such as the extremities. A sprained ankle, a jammed elbow, or a stiff finger can often be helped a great deal with adjustments and other therapies.
In the more than one hundred years that chiropracic has been in existence, much of th significant and reproducible research has been compressed within the past two decades. The past five years has been particularly significant with the evidence supporting the primary chiropractic intervention (mainipulation) as one of the first-line means of health care intervention in the treatment of acute low back pain in adults. The science of chiropractic comes from basic science evidence, case studies, clinical trials, and other outcome studies.
The art of chiropractic is based on a matrix of patient validation, collaboration and treatment. Our doctors help the patient realize that they have personal control over their health that requires commitment and cooperation between doctor and patient. We approach treatment of a condition from a patient-centered perspective; in other words, we treat the person, not the disease. Additionally, the art of chiropractic is a process wherein our doctors create a treatment approach based on the individual complexities of your condition. Through highly skilled manual procedures, our doctors utilize the healing power of touch while also instilling in the patient a firm belief in their body's ability to heal itself.
The philosophy of chiropractic is based on the concept of holism. This means that all systems in the human body are related and cannot be viewed as separate or individual. We believe that true health comes from within, that the body has an "innate intelligence" that continually strives to maintain homeostatis, or balance, and that in that state of balance, the body will heal itself. When the nervous system is correctly functioning, our bodies are able to adapt to a myriad of environmental inputs including physical, chemical and emotional. The holistic philosphy of chiropractic promotes health, prevents illness, and encourages healing through care that focuses on the total indivudual in the context of personal, familial, social, and enviromental factors.
